Indeed, had I been foolish enough to do so,
I would ask what the Government would have con- sidered me capable of doing!
yet had I ad-
hered strictly to my duty, I should have allowed the farce to be completed.
Such nonsense as indiotated above was pre- vented by me.
In connection with these sloping ridges, I
beg to call your attention to page 4 of Mr. Jones' letter (marxed "C") wherein it will be noted that
this lowering was not shown on the drawings until
the 29th July,.1909, or even mentioned until the
27th August, 1909.
I would further point out that during the
month of September, 1909, it was agreed by the
Government and the Architects that I should pre-
pare the more important details to enable the
work to proceed.
I beg also to attach copy of Mr. Jones' (who
was Director of Public Works during Mr. Chatham's
leave) draft letter to the Architects,
in December, 1909.

the last clause on page 5 of this letter which
demonstrates the difficulty that other officers
of the Department experienced with the Architects
in question.
